Happy Summer Northstar!
This Tuesday was the summer solstice, otherwise known as the longest day of the year. Which equates to the most daylight available for riding. That is unless you are in Australia or something. But despite it being officially summer, it is still hard for some to believe the warm sunny season has finally found us, especially with all of the snow that still remains at Northstar-at-Tahoe. Opening weekend was fun but a few people I rode the gondola with were bummed about only the lower part of the mountain being open. Speaking from an ecological background it is very understandable that they can't open the upper trails just yet with all the risk of erosion that could hurt the local watershed. But with a NOAA issued flood advisory for the Truckee area blowing up my smart phone on the daily, I know that all that white stuff must be melting like crazy and moving naturally off the mountain. Sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s pretty much all this week can almost guaranteed this trend of meltage will continue and more fun trails will be open very, very soon.
In the meantime, Mineshaft has been receiving lots of love and I didn't get too bored sessioning its dialed berms and hitting up Liftline and Woods thereafter. The jump park is ready and waiting for you and the smaller jump line should be seeing some major improvements coming soon. The Saturday night premiere of Clay Porter's "3 Minute Gaps" was pretty much off the hook, complete with great raffle prizes from big companies like Giant, Fox, and Shimano. This racing focused documentary featured some unique filming practices and followed the stories of several world cup riders (all dudes :( ). I didn't really love all the talking that happens in the movie, however I really enjoyed the scene near the end where Aaron Gwin gets super sideways and wicked low to the ground over and over again over this jump in a grassy meadow with a golden sunset in the background....
So to sum it all up, last weekend was pretty spectacular and I foresee much awesomeness in the near future. And since a picture is worth like a thousand words, I thought a video might be worth a million? Filmed mostly by Sarah puppy, I accompanied it with some "emo" music to convey my loneliness riding. Ladies please come up and ride with me so we can make a way radder flick :)
